Take it for what it is
2 January 2015 | by  (United States and Canada) – See all my reviews
The negative reviews for this film abound. It seems most are comparing it to the first Scorpion King, with "The Rock." Admittedly, the three that have thus far followed it aren't nearly of the same quality. But if you put that aside and just take it for what it is, it's a fun film, with some wit and levity that even had me chuckle out loud a couple of times. It wasn't full of gratuitous sex or vulgarity. It's just a fun action adventure popcorn movie. It will not rank among the best movies of all time nor is it trying to do so. I had just returned from another 7-hour chemotherapy session and this film hit the spot: Brainless and fun entertainment. If you just take it for what it is, I hope you'll enjoy Scorpion King 4 as much as I did.

Mortdecai wants to join the ranks of comedic oddball characters like Mr. Bean and Clouseau, but comes off as embarrassing
27 January 2015 | by  (Murrieta, CA) – See all my reviews

I love eccentric characters whether they are the silent Mr. Bean, the bumbling Inspector Clouseau or even the wealthy treasure hunter Scrooge McDuck. Like any good story about an outcast, they are deemed stranger then the rest of the world and tend to use that to their advantage to find a gold mine or crack the latest case in France. I too consider myself an eccentric with my oddball quirks and strange interests including amusement park history and animation. You could say that everyone has a little eccentric inside of them, but only few would dare express it as their full personality.

Cinema is a large home to this breed of person. Often you will find these people associated with comedies as they make it aware that the characters behavior is more out of place, even if the world they live in is exaggerated or romanticized. Though I would love to see a drama about an oddball, these try to explain some mental illness like that their sick or something. This is something that I wish more movies would try to cut away from and simply explain that this is your hero and he's this way just because. We get another quirky eccentric with Mortdecai.

Lord Charlie Mortdecai (played by Johnny Depp) is a pompous, wealthy art dealer who tries to portray himself as classy, comes off of a goof. He lives in a large home along with his man servant/muscle Jock Strapp (played by Paul Bettany) and his wife who he always declares as the love of his life Johanna (played by Gwyneth Paltrow). A Goya painting is stolen from a woman that was working on restoring the artwork. So this puts inspector Alistair Martland (played by Ewan McGregor) on the case. He has a thing for Johanna, so he contacts Mortdecai for his services, knowing that this would keep the eccentric busy while he get's cozy with the wife.

Mortdecai's investigations unveil that the painting was once taken by Nazis and may have codes on it that lead to a lost Swiss bank account. He also finds the painting stashed in his car, leading the police to believe that Mortdecai himself took the painting. He travels to Los Angeles to engage in an art transaction with Milton Krampf (played by Jeff Goldbloom). Johanna and Martland follow suit as they may be closer to finding the real thieves then Mortdecai is.

Johnny Depp has had some trouble in recent years with Dark Shadows, The Lone Ranger and Transcendence all bombing. He was hoping that Mortdecai would be his big comeback and start a new franchise. I was hoping this would work, but this just may be his lowest point. While the character may be funny on paper, Depp's portrayal seems more like a bad improv piece then a genuine performance. I can tell he's trying his hardest, but no other actor could have saved it from it's shockingly unfunny script. It seems like Depp simply got stuck with a character that no one else wanted to play.

I have no clue for who this movie was made for. Certainly not for children as this has an R rating. Not for teenage fans of Depp that will find this too boring. Not for a mainstream adult audience that will see this as too highbrow. Not for a highbrow society as they will see this as too silly. I'm convinced that this was made just so that Johnny Depp can have fun with both Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor. Congratulations Mr. Depp, because you just got a project that is unfunny, boring, crude yet not crude, and even manage to take down two great actors with you.

I'll give this half a Goya painting out of ten. What should have been a match made in heaven, Pink Panther-like movie will only stand as an embarrassment to a really talented individual who should be ashamed of himself!

Entertaining without being over the top!
30 July 2015 | by  – See all my reviews

TL;DR: Visually stunning, action filled and down to earth action sequences (no over the top BS). Storyline with nice twists and pretty good for an action movie, though watching Ghost Protocol helps getting to know the IMF crew (there's no introduction this time around).

**spoiler-free**

Rogue Nation, like the latest movies in the franchise and others in the spy/action genre, starts with a small crew, with little support, against huge odds, having to deal with challenges that seem impossible (no pun intended).

What makes Rogue Nation better than most is that it makes it all plausible without super-human characters, crazy gizmos (except one that I shaw not mention, but it is not overused like in M:I II), and brilliantly made down-to-earth action sequences. The latest 007 movies are following the same ideals, but M:I has made a solid choice of supporting actors (specially Simon Pegg) that add a subtle layer of comedy and improvisation, which helps a lot into building some suspense in the audience - it feels like as if they are as clueless as we are of what is going to happen.

Another great aspect that sets this moving apart are the terrific action sequences which are paired with outstanding sound effects and music score (without spoiling, there is an entire action sequence that plays with this very aspect). Was lucky enough to watch a pre-screening on IMAX, and strongly recommend watching it on IMAX or a theater with a good audio setup.
The storyline, while not hard to follow, benefits from having watched at least Ghost Protocol, since key characters are back and lack some introduction, and the story somewhat picks from what took place in the last instance. Much like Ghost Protocol, the storyline packs some interesting twists and doesn't seem obvious - even though we all know that the good guys win, Rogue Nation adds some shady characters which are not as black and white, making for some interesting development.

Overall a highly entertaining movie, packed with stunning action sequences and a storyline that is well thought-out and manages to keep the audience hooked until the end. A solid addition to the franchise that keeps one-upping itself on every new release.

clever idea poorly executed, equals a boring waste of time
6 July 2015 | by  (United States) – See all my reviews

While the concept is clever, and it does have some humorous bits, especially in the closing credits, the overall execution of the story is poorly done. The story drags slowly, is very disconnected, and does not engage the viewer, ending up with the movie being a totally boring waste of time. I did not enjoy this film at all, even though it had a unicorn as a minor character.

The plot is one dimensional and does not go anywhere interesting. It really needed more time spent in development to really make something worthwhile out of the concept. I do not understand why it is doing so well. There is nothing creative in this film as opposed to Tomorrowland which was amazing and and brilliant! Do not waste your time on this film. It is not worth i

What a Lovely Day!
12 May 2015 | by  (London, England) – See all my reviews

What a Lovely Day and What a Lovely Movie! This is just beyond expectations! There is nothing easy or predictable about what George Miller delivers with Mad Max: Fury Road, a stone-cold action master class, beautiful and brainy and startling in the ways it throws off the current definition of the blockbuster. There is gargantuan excess here, to be sure - and no shortage of madness - but there is also an astonishing level of discipline. Come for the blistering, full-tilt action, stay for the thought-provoking consideration of the post-apocalypse. The world of Mad Max has always been welded together from bits of whatever was lying around, and the films' brilliance has always been in their welding - the ingenious ways in which their scrap- metal parts were combined to create something unthinkable, hilarious or obscene, and often all three.

Now to take the fruit of my labor, the fruit called revenge.
5 August 2015 | by  (United States) – See all my reviews

Once again Akira Toriyama demonstrates that he is best qualified to write for Dragon Ball with his screenplay for Resurrection F. A strong following after the great Battle of Gods. Mr. Toriyama excels, giving us an action vibe rather than the screwball comedy from the last. In other words, back to typical Dragon Ball Z form after the change of pace from the previous entry(it is always good to mix it up every now and then.) With awesome battles, and a best of the Z fighters, it is win-win for Dragon Ball Z fans. Much like the preceding film, there are callbacks for the fans(the prior movie being more a tribute to Dragon Ball as a whole.) Of course the best call back would be bringing back fan favorite Frieza.

Set fourteen years after Frieza's death, and one year after Battle of Gods, the film starts with Frieza's former henchmen working to revive him. Upon his restoration he wants nothing but vengeance for his defeat at Goku's hands. Unfortunately Goku and Vegeta are not on Earth, so it is up to the other Z fighters to keep Frieza's army at bay until the pair return to start their epic battle with Frieza.

Great fights, impressive animation, very funny, and even some serious bits that add to the sense of palpable danger, Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F is a must see for fans of the series. If you have not seen Battle of Gods before this, then you should(considering Lord Beerus is introduced there.)

Learning to Drive

Hollister and O'Toole were completely charmed by "Learning to Drive" at this week's Provincetown International Film Festival – where it rightfully took home the @hbo #AudienceAward. (At the Toronto International Film Festival audiences ranked it second only to "The Imitation Game".)

It is a simple story of two very different lives intersecting, at just the right moment. As Hollister says, it's not just about Learning to Drive – it's really about Learning to Live.

Featuring the indomitable re-pairing of Sir Ben Kingsley (yes, our Oscar-winning "Gandhi") and Oscar-nominee (and two-time Emmy winner for "Six Feet Under") Patricia Clarkson. Directed by Barcelona's very talented Isabel Coixet (who also directed Kingsley, Clarkson, and Penélope Cruz in "Elegy"). Screenplay by Sarah Kernochan – who has won two (!) Oscars for her documentaries, and whose artistic output has given O'Toole a complete complex.

Grace Gummer (Meryl Streep's real-life daughter) plays the movie daughter of Clarkson (who, like Meryl, went to the Yale School of Drama) and Jake Weber (Patricia Arquette's husband on "Medium").

Hollister and O'Toole – and their complexes – completely apologize when it comes to pronouncing last names in this podcast. Isabel Coixet, Sarah Kernochan – please just come give us a tutorial so we can sing your praises in person.

Theatrical release set for August 21, 2015.

Podcast extras include:

Official "Learning to Drive" trailer Clip from "Elegy" Musical excerpt from "Thoth" (the Oscar-winning short documentary by "Learning to Drive" screenwriter Sarah Kernochan.

Uncouth plagiarism and redundantly dated
9 June 2015 | by  (United States) – See all my reviews

Woody Allen you are NOT Peter Bogdanovich, no matter how hard you want to be.

The cast of She's Funny That Way is top notch, so much so that we wonder how many favors did writer/director Peter Bogdonavich call in for this film.

About a medley of characters and story lines weaving and turning on the island of Manhattan, but grounded and connected by their relationship to an upcoming Broadway play. It is an uncouth onslaught of cliché characters and dated plot lines with a stylistically plagiarized direction.

Everything about She's Funny That Way is unsophisticated and copied, without an original thought, idea or vision. The nostalgia for the good ol' days of film and filmmaking permeates the screen without leaving an impression itself. Perhaps if the film was a product of a novice film maker then the offense would not be so painful, but Peter Bogdonavich has no such excuse to rely upon. The film  oozes a dilettantish desire to emulate the famous style of film of the 1970's, without the refinement to modernize it for current audiences.

There is a difference between referencing something to pay homage and blatantly ripping off someone's style. She's Funny That Way is a case of the latter, and is only entertaining in the whodunnit aspect of the narrative. If it were not for the prowess and reputation that Bogdonavich's name holds, this film probably would not have seen the light of day.
